All housing in the City of Montreal sits on the island of Tiohtià:ke. The
Kanien’kehá:ka Nation are traditionally regarded as the custodians of this
land.
We engage in this practice of recognition and discussion because colonialism
continues. Many indigenous people continue to face corporate and governmental
land theft, racism, the worst consequences of the extractive industry,
criminalization by the government, poverty, and homelessness.
By recognizing our colonial reality, we remind ourselves of the necessity to
take action and show solidarity with indigenous allies. Our tenants’ union will
fight against putting itself in a position of authority over this land and its
first peoples. We must extend the principle of an "injury to one is an injury
to all" to indigenous union members and non-members.
